Rising from the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands offer one of the most dramatic and unique landscapes in Europe. With towering sea cliffs, windswept mountains, isolated villages and waterfalls tumbling directly into the ocean, this remote archipelago is an exceptional destination for landscape photographers.
With its wild beauty, sense of remoteness and ever-changing North Atlantic weather, the Faroe Islands provide an incredible opportunity to explore and photograph a landscape shaped by the elements, where every location offers something unique.
Combining iconic viewpoints with lesser-known locations, we’ll seek out the incredible scenery that make the Faroes such a rewarding destination for photography.
Exploring the northern islands – Kunoy, Borðoy & Viðoy
Our adventure begins in the rugged north-east of the islands, where steep mountains plunge into deep fjords and tiny settlements cling to the coastline. We’ll explore the islands of Kunoy, Borðoy and Viðoy, discovering some of the most impressive mountain and coastal landscapes in the Faroes.
A highlight will be the hike to Klakkur Mountain, where we’ll be rewarded with one of the classic Faroe Islands panoramas — sweeping views across jagged peaks, islands and fjords, including the iconic silhouettes of Kalsoy and Kunoy. This is a wonderful opportunity to capture the scale and raw beauty of the landscape as the light changes throughout the evening.
Kalsoy – Kallur Lighthouse & the legend of Kópakonan
A journey to the island of Kalsoy is one of the great Faroe Islands experiences. Travelling by ferry, we’ll cross the Atlantic to this narrow, mountainous island, famous for its dramatic ridgelines and spectacular coastal scenery.
We’ll walk out towards the iconic Kallur Lighthouse, perched dramatically on a cliff edge with incredible views across the surrounding islands. The combination of rugged mountains, ocean vistas and constantly changing light providing plenty of photographic potential.
We’ll also visit the village of Mikladalur, home to the famous Kópakonan (Seal Woman) statue, where Faroese folklore meets a breathtaking coastal setting.
Eysturoy – fjords, villages & dramatic mountain landscapes
The island of Eysturoy offers some of the most varied landscapes in the Faroes, from picturesque fishing harbours to dramatic mountain scenery.
A highlight of our time here will be exploring the spectacular Funningsleið mountain pass, one of the most scenic drives in the Faroes. We’ll also walk the Gongutúrur / Hvithamar path, a rewarding route offering incredible elevated views over fjords, mountains and coastal landscapes.
Gjógv, one of the Faroes’ most photogenic villages, is famous for its natural harbour, colourful houses and dramatic setting beneath the surrounding mountains.
Streymoy – waterfalls, villages and iconic sea stacks
Streymoy is the largest island in the Faroe archipelago. It is home to the impressive Fossá Waterfall; one of the tallest waterfalls in the islands, where cascading water meets a dramatic mountain backdrop.
The beautiful, remote settlement of Tjørnuvík, is surrounded by steep mountains and black-sand beaches. From here, we’ll photograph the legendary sea stacks of Risin og Kellingin rising from the Atlantic Ocean – one of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic views.
Vágar – waterfalls, cliffs and unforgettable sunsets
Vágar is an island renowned for some of the Faroes’ most famous landscapes. Travelling via the stunning village of Saksun, with its tidal lagoon, mountains and traditional grass-roofed buildings, we’ll explore more of this remarkable island.
One of the ultimate Faroe Islands photographic experiences is sunset at Gásadalur and Múlafossur Waterfall. With the waterfall cascading into the ocean beneath towering cliffs, this iconic location perfectly captures the wild and elemental beauty of the Faroes.
Expert guidance from James Rushforth
This tour of the Faroe Islands will be run by pro-photographer James Rushforth who has an intimate knowledge of the region accompanied by a local Faroese driver-guide.
Making the most of the ever-changing conditions and with time carefully planned around the best photographic opportunities, together you will explore a wide variety of landscapes while developing composition, camera technique and creative approaches in this extraordinary environment.
